- 1 Cup Molasses
- 1 Cup Butter Flavored Shortening
- 1 Cup Sugar
- 1 Large Egg
- 2 teaspoons Baking Soda
- 6 Cups Flour
- 3/4 teaspoon Ground Cloves
- 3 teaspoons Cinnamon
- 1 teaspoon Salt
- 1 1/2 teaspoons Ground Ginger
- 1/2 Cup Water (hot)
- 6 Cups Powdered Sugar
- 2/3 Cups Milk
- 4 teaspoons Vanilla
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and line baking sheets with parchment paper.
- In a large mixing bowl, blend molasses, shortening, sugar, egg, and vanilla until smooth.
- In another bowl, whisk together baking soda, ground cloves, cinnamon, salt, ground ginger, and flour. Gradually combine with the wet mixture.
- Slowly incorporate hot water until the dough is manageable.
- Roll out the dough on a floured surface to about 1/4 inch thick and cut into shapes.
- Bake cookies for about 10 minutes until edges are firm. Cool before decorating.
