The addition of sour cream creates a soft, tender crumb, while ripe bananas add natural sweetness. Perfect for both breakfast and dessert, this loaf is a chocolate lover’s dream.

  • Total Time: 1 hour 15 minutes

Ingredients

Scale

1 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
3/4 cup brown sugar (packed, light or dark)
3 large ripe bananas, mashed
2 large eggs, room temperature
1/2 cup sour cream, room temperature
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips (plus extra for topping)
1/4 cup mini chocolate chips

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and line a 9×5-inch loaf pan with parchment paper.
  • In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt. Set aside.
  • In a large bowl, combine the melted butter and brown sugar, mixing until smooth.
  • Add the mashed bananas, eggs, sour cream, and vanilla extract. Mix until fully combined.
  • Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, stirring until just combined. Do not overmix.
  • Fold in the semi-sweet chocolate chips and mini chocolate chips.
  • Pour the batter into the prepared loaf pan and smooth the top. Sprinkle extra chocolate chips over the batter.
  • Bake for 55–65 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out with a few moist crumbs.
  • Allow the bread to cool in the pan for 10–15 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.
